Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules decide who proceeds first so traffic flows without conflict. The law tells you when to yield, never when to force your way through.
Stops and intersections
At a four-way stop, the first vehicle to stop goes first; if two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.
Turns and red lights
You may turn right on red after a complete stop and yielding, unless a sign prohibits it. When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and to crossing pedestrians before completing the turn.
School buses
You must stop at least 10 feet from a school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, whether you are behind it or meeting it, and stay stopped until the lights stop flashing and the arm is withdrawn.
