Traffic signs, signals and pavement markings communicate the rules and warn of hazards ahead. Learning their shapes and colors lets you react before you even read the words.
Shapes and colors
A red octagon is a STOP sign and a downward triangle is a YIELD sign. Yellow diamonds warn of hazards or changes ahead, orange marks construction and work zones, and white rectangular signs state regulations you must obey.
Traffic lights
A steady red means stop, a steady yellow warns that red is coming so stop if you safely can, and a steady green lets you go when clear. A flashing red is treated as a STOP sign, while a flashing yellow means proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
A solid yellow line on your side means no passing, while a broken yellow line allows passing when safe. White lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.
