Speed & Conditions
Choosing a safe speed for the conditions is a legal duty, not just a courtesy. Weather and road surface change how far you need to stop.
Speed limits
The default maximum speed limit in Pennsylvania is 55 mph unless otherwise posted, and some interstates and the turnpike are posted up to 70 mph. Work zones and school zones carry reduced limits when in effect.
Basic driving rule and lights
Never drive faster than is safe for current conditions such as rain, snow, fog or heavy traffic. State law also requires your headlights to be on whenever your wipers are running continuously because of weather.
Wet roads and hydroplaning
Wet surfaces lengthen stopping distances, so increase your following distance. If you begin to hydroplane, ease off the accelerator, avoid hard braking or sharp steering, and hold the wheel steady until traction returns.
