Alcohol, Drugs & Quebec Graduated Licensing

Quebec sets strict limits on alcohol and drugs, especially for young and new drivers, and records demerit points for offences.

Zero and general limits

Drivers 21 or under, and new drivers holding a learner's or probationary licence, must have a blood alcohol level of zero. For a fully licensed adult the general criminal limit is 80 mg per 100 ml of blood (0.08).

Drugs and cannabis

Driving while impaired by cannabis or other drugs is a criminal offence. Learner and probationary drivers face zero tolerance for drugs as well as alcohol.

Demerit points

Convictions for traffic offences add demerit points to your record. Reaching the limit for your licence class leads to a suspension, and new drivers reach that limit with far fewer points.
