Traffic Signs & Signals

Signs, lights and road markings tell you what you must do and warn of what lies ahead in Quebec.

Sign shapes and colours

A red octagon is always a STOP sign and needs a full stop. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards or changes ahead, an inverted triangle means YIELD, and white regulatory signs (such as speed limits) state rules you must obey.

Traffic lights

A flashing red light means stop, then go when safe, like a stop sign. In Quebec a flashing green light gives you an advance (protected) turn because oncoming traffic is still stopped on red.

Pavement markings

Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions, and you may cross a broken yellow line to pass only when safe. White lines separate lanes travelling in the same direction.
