Speed & Road Conditions
Adjust your speed to the posted limit and to the weather, road and traffic around you.
Speed limits
Unless a sign says otherwise, the default limit in a Quebec urban area is 50 km/h. The maximum on an autoroute (freeway) is generally 100 km/h; always drive to conditions and never exceed the posted limit.
Winter tires
Quebec law requires passenger vehicles to have winter tires from December 1 to March 15. They grip much better than summer or worn all-season tires on snow and ice.
Wet and slippery roads
Slow down on wet roads to avoid hydroplaning; if the steering feels light, ease off the accelerator and hold the wheel steady rather than braking hard. Increase your following distance whenever traction is reduced.
