Alcohol, Drugs & Demerit Points

New drivers must not mix any alcohol or drugs with driving. Doing so risks lives and your licence.

Zero alcohol for new drivers

Learner and provisional (P1 and P2) drivers in Queensland must have a zero (0.00) blood alcohol concentration whenever they drive. An open licence holder must stay under 0.05, but the zero rule applies until you gain an open licence.

Drug driving

It is an offence to drive with certain illegal drugs present in your body, and police conduct roadside saliva testing. Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines can also affect driving, so check labels and advice.

Demerit points

Demerit points are recorded against your licence for offences. Learner and provisional drivers reach their threshold and face action with fewer points than open licence holders. Confirm the current figure with the official source.
