Sharing the Road Safely
You share Queensland roads with cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and heavy vehicles, sometimes over long distances. Space, patience and rest keep everyone safe.
Cyclists and merging
When passing a bicycle rider leave at least 1 metre where the limit is 60 km/h or less, and at least 1.5 metres where it is over 60 km/h. Where lane lines end and traffic merges, give way to any vehicle ahead of you and merge like a zip.
Avoiding distraction
Learner and P1 drivers must not use a mobile phone at all while driving, including hands-free and while stopped in traffic. Distraction is a leading cause of crashes for new drivers.
Fatigue on long trips
Queensland has long distances between towns. Fatigue slows reaction time and judgement as much as alcohol can. Plan regular rest breaks, share the driving where possible, and stop when you feel drowsy.
