Speed & Road Conditions

Speed limits are maximums for good conditions. Adjust for weather, traffic and the special limits that apply to new drivers.

Speed limits

In a built-up area with no signs the default limit is 50 km/h. Open roads are commonly 100 km/h and some highways are signed to 110 km/h. Always follow the posted limit where signs are shown.

Learner and P1 limit

Learner and P1 drivers in Queensland must not exceed 100 km/h, even where the posted limit is higher. This helps new drivers build experience at safer speeds.

Conditions and emergency vehicles

Keep at least a 3-second gap and increase it in rain, fog or at night, because stopping distances grow on wet or slippery roads. Slow to 40 km/h when passing a stationary emergency vehicle that is displaying flashing lights.
