Alaska Licensing Requirements and Education

Pre-License Education and Examination
An applicant for an Alaska salesperson license must complete the required approved pre-license education and pass the licensing examination, which covers both national real estate principles and Alaska-specific law. Applicants must also meet good-character and eligibility requirements set by the Commission. Passing the exam is a prerequisite, but the license is not active until the applicant affiliates with a broker.
Broker Affiliation
A newly licensed Alaska salesperson may practice only when the license is placed with and the salesperson is supervised by a licensed Alaska broker. The affiliating broker accepts responsibility for the salesperson's licensed activity and for proper handling of trust funds. If a salesperson leaves the broker, the salesperson generally may not conduct licensed activity until the license is placed with a new broker.
Renewal and Continuing Education
Alaska real estate licenses are issued for a fixed term and renew on a set cycle, and licensees must complete Commission-approved continuing education before renewing. Continuing education keeps licensees current with changes in law and practice. Practicing on an expired license, or renewing without required education, can subject a licensee to discipline.
