Licensing Requirements
This chapter covers how a person becomes and stays licensed as a real estate broker in Colorado. It addresses education, examination, supervision, and continuing requirements administered by the Commission. Meeting these requirements is a prerequisite to lawful practice.
Becoming Licensed
Colorado requires prelicensing education, passing the state and national portions of the broker exam, a background check, and errors and omissions insurance. Because Colorado licenses everyone as a broker, a new licensee typically begins as an associate broker. An associate broker must work under the supervision of an employing broker. These steps ensure new licensees are qualified and supervised before serving the public.
Maintaining and Advancing a License
Brokers must renew their licenses and complete required continuing education to stay current with law and practice. Advancing from associate broker to independent or employing broker requires additional experience and education set by the Commission. Employing brokers take on responsibility for supervising associate brokers. Keeping the license active and in good standing is necessary to continue performing brokerage activity.
