Indiana License Law (IC 25-34.1)
Indiana real estate licensing is governed by Indiana Code Title 25, Article 34.1, and administered by the Indiana Real Estate Commission through the Professional Licensing Agency (PLA). This chapter reviews Indiana's license structure and supervision rules.
The Commission and the PLA
The Indiana Real Estate Commission establishes licensing and practice standards, while the Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) provides administrative support: processing applications, renewals, and complaints. Together they enforce Indiana's real estate statute and administrative rules.
Indiana's Broker License Structure
Indiana uses a single entry-level license titled 'broker.' A newly licensed broker must affiliate with and work under a 'managing broker,' who supervises activities and is responsible for company trust accounts and records. This differs from states that use a separate 'salesperson' license, though the entry-level broker role is the functional equivalent.
Supervision and Discipline
Managing brokers are responsible for supervising the brokers associated with their company and for proper handling of client funds and records. The Commission may discipline licensees for violations such as misrepresentation, mishandling funds, or failing to disclose agency, with penalties up to license revocation.
