New Jersey Licensing Requirements and Education

Pre-License Education and Exam
An applicant must complete 75 hours of approved pre-license education before sitting for the New Jersey salesperson examination. The candidate must pass the exam, which covers national and New Jersey-specific content, and satisfy character and eligibility requirements before licensure.
Broker Sponsorship
A new salesperson's license becomes active only when the salesperson is sponsored by a licensed New Jersey broker who agrees to supervise the licensee. The sponsoring broker is accountable for the salesperson's licensed activity and for the proper handling of escrow money.
Continuing Education and Renewal
New Jersey licenses renew on a set cycle, and licensees must complete Commission-approved continuing education, including required core topics such as ethics and fair housing, before renewing. Continuing education keeps licensees current with law and practice. Allowing a license to lapse can require reinstatement steps before practice resumes.
