Chapter 15 of 1515% of exam

South Dakota Licensing Requirements and Education

South Dakota sets pre-license education, examination, association, and continuing-education requirements for broker associates. This chapter summarizes the path to and maintenance of a South Dakota license.

Pre-License Education and Exam

An applicant for a South Dakota broker associate license must complete the Commission-approved pre-license education before taking the licensing examination. The candidate must pass the exam, which covers national and South Dakota-specific content, and meet the Commission's eligibility requirements, including a background review.

Association with a Responsible Broker

A broker associate license becomes active only when the licensee is associated with a responsible broker who supervises the licensee's activity. Without an active responsible broker, the licensee may not conduct brokerage. Changing brokers requires updating the association with the Commission.

Continuing Education and Renewal

South Dakota licenses renew on a set cycle, and licensees must complete Commission-approved continuing education before renewing. Continuing education keeps licensees current on law and practice. Letting a license lapse can require additional steps before the licensee may resume practice.
