State Licensing Requirements (Virginia)

Prelicensing and Examination
To become a Virginia salesperson, an applicant must be at least 18, complete 60 hours of approved prelicensing education, pass the licensing examination, and meet character and background requirements (Va. Code § 54.1-2105(B); age and background at 18VAC135-20-30; checked 2026-09-09). The license becomes active once the salesperson is affiliated with a supervising broker who sponsors the applicant.
Post-License and Continuing Education
Virginia requires newly licensed salespersons to complete post-license education (30 hours) during their first year, covering practical topics such as contracts, agency, and fair housing (Va. Code § 54.1-2105.01; checked 2026-09-09). After that, licensees complete continuing education at each renewal (Virginia renews on a two-year cycle).
