Prelicensing and Exam
A Washington broker applicant must complete 90 clock hours of approved prelicensing education, typically a 60-hour Real Estate Fundamentals course and a 30-hour Real Estate Practices course, then pass the licensing examination (RCW 18.85.101(1)(c); the 60/30 split is prescribed by the director under WAC 308-124H, not by statute; checked 2026-09-09). Applicants must be at least 18 and meet character requirements, and the license activates when the broker affiliates with a firm.
Renewal and Continuing Education
Washington broker licenses renew every two years and require continuing education, including a required core course, to keep the license active. New licensees may have additional first-renewal education requirements. Maintaining current education keeps licensees informed of changes in law and practice.
