How to Choose a SHRM-CP Study Guide (2026)

Start with SHRM's own free materials — the BASK download and the sample questions — then choose paid prep by how you study. The SHRM-CP exam is built from the SHRM BASK: 134 questions, with 40% of the exam in situational judgment. Every option below is described from the provider's own page, with the price as listed on the day we checked. The PrepPass guide (PDF + EPUB, $24.99) follows the BASK's behavioral clusters and HR knowledge domains, with a quiz after each chapter, two full-length practice exams and six domain practice sets.

On a tight budget

Start with the two free SHRM materials — the BASK download and the sample questions. Paid options here start at $20.99/month for Pocket Prep, which lets you try 30 questions free first; the PrepPass guide is $24.99 one time.

Testing in the Dec. 1 – Feb. 15 window

SHRM's handbook sets the second 2026 testing window at Dec. 1, 2026 – Feb. 15, 2027, with the standard application period running Sept. 1 – Dec. 24, 2026. Count back from the date you book: with only a few weeks left, something you can work through daily (a question bank or a book with quizzes) fits better than a course that runs on its own schedule.

Reading versus a live instructor

If you learn by reading, Mometrix's SHRM-CP Exam Secrets is a book at $38.99 for the eBook or $43.99 in print. If you want a person, SHRM's own instructor-led Prep+ is $1,940, and Northwestern's remote 36-hour course with a SHRM-certified instructor is $1,575 and includes the Prep System.

Practising situational-judgment items

The handbook gives 40% of the exam to situational judgment. SHRM's free sample questions are real, retired exam items; the Prep System's practice exam uses questions previously used on actual SHRM certification exams; and Pocket Prep's bank holds 1,600 study questions across quiz modes including a mock exam.

Is there a PDF SHRM-CP study guide?

Yes. The PrepPass SHRM-CP guide is PDF + EPUB, 487 pages, $24.99, with a 14-day refund window. Mometrix's SHRM-CP Exam Secrets also comes as an eBook. SHRM's BASK is a free PDF too, but it is the exam's content framework rather than a study guide.

What does the PrepPass SHRM-CP guide not include?

It is PDF + EPUB only, with no video, audio, or live instruction. It contains no questions previously used on SHRM exams — SHRM's own Prep System has those. There is no adaptive learning path. It is an independent study aid, not connected to SHRM.

Can I take the SHRM-CP with no HR experience?

Yes. SHRM's 2026 handbook says SHRM-CP candidates "do not need a degree or previous HR experience to apply" and are not required to hold an HR title; a basic working knowledge of HR practices is recommended.

Is the SHRM Learning System the same as the SHRM Certification Prep System?

Yes — SHRM's own wording is "SHRM Certification Prep System — formerly known as the SHRM Learning System". It is the same product line under its current name.
