Alcohol, Drugs & Demerit Points
New drivers must keep alcohol and drugs completely out of driving. It protects lives and your licence.
Zero alcohol for new drivers
Learner and provisional (P1 and P2) drivers in South Australia must have a zero (0.00) blood alcohol concentration whenever they drive. A fully licensed driver must stay under 0.05, but the zero rule applies until you gain a full licence.
Drug driving
It is an offence to drive with certain illegal drugs present in your body, and police conduct roadside saliva testing. Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines can also affect driving, so check labels and seek advice.
Demerit points
Demerit points are recorded against your licence for offences. Learner and P1 drivers face disqualification after accumulating fewer points than a full licence holder. Confirm the current figure with the official source.
