Sharing the Road Safely
You share the road with cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and heavy vehicles. Extra space and attention protect the most vulnerable road users.
Cyclists and following distance
When passing a bicycle rider you must leave at least 1 metre where the limit is 60 km/h or less, and at least 1.5 metres where it is over 60 km/h. Keep at least a 3-second following gap and increase it in poor conditions.
Motorcyclists
Motorcyclists are smaller and easier to miss, and can be hidden in your blind spots. Check your mirrors and blind spots and signal early so riders can anticipate your movements before you change lanes or turn.
Avoiding distraction
Learner and P1 drivers must not use a mobile phone at all while driving, including hands-free and while stopped in traffic. Keeping your attention on the road helps you respond to other road users in time.
