Signs & Signals
Signs and signals tell you the rules, warn of hazards and guide you. Reading them early helps you drive smoothly and safely.
Regulatory signs
Regulatory signs set legal rules. A red octagonal STOP sign means stop completely behind the line, then give way. A triangular GIVE WAY sign means slow down and be ready to stop to give way. A number in a red circle is the maximum speed limit for that road.
Warning and guide signs
Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn of hazards ahead, such as curves, slippery roads, crossings or animals, so you can slow down and prepare. Blue and white signs generally give guidance and service information, such as directions, parking or facilities.
Traffic lights and arrows
Red means stop and stay behind the line. A red arrow means you must not go in that direction until it turns green. Yellow means stop if you can do so safely. Green means proceed if the way is clear and you have given way where required.
