Chapter 4 of 520% of exam

Speed & Road Conditions

The speed limit is a maximum for good conditions. New drivers must also observe the special limits that apply to them.

Speed limits

In a built-up area with no signs the default limit is 50 km/h. Open roads are commonly 100 km/h and some are signed to 110 km/h. Always drive to the posted limit where signs are shown.

Learner and P1 limit

Learner (L) and P1 drivers in South Australia must not exceed 100 km/h, even where the posted limit is higher. This helps new drivers build experience at safer speeds.

Emergency vehicles and conditions

In South Australia you must slow to 25 km/h when passing a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights, then pass with care. Reduce speed and increase your following distance in rain, fog or at night, because stopping distances grow.
