Impaired driving is a serious crime in South Carolina, and new drivers earn privileges in stages while they gain experience. Knowing these rules protects your license and your safety.
Impaired driving limits
A driver 21 or older is legally impaired at 0.08 percent BAC. Drivers under 21 face a stricter 0.02 percent zero-tolerance standard, so any measurable alcohol can lead to a license suspension.
Beginner's permit
You may apply for a regular beginner's permit at age 15 after passing the knowledge and vision tests, and practice with a licensed adult 21 or older in the front seat.
Conditional and restricted licenses
During the conditional or special restricted stage, driving is generally limited to no more than two passengers under 21 and restricted at night, with exceptions such as travel to or from school. Confirm the current stages, ages, and hours with the SC DMV.
