Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Safe drivers manage space, protect other road users, and limit distractions. These habits prevent most everyday crashes.
Following distance and buses
Keep at least a three-to-four-second following distance in good conditions and add more time in rain or heavy traffic. Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and stop arm out, and stay stopped until it withdraws them.
Distracted driving
South Carolina prohibits using a wireless device to compose, send, or read a text message while driving. Set your phone and route before you start and keep your eyes on the road.
Seat belts
South Carolina enforces its seat belt law as a primary offense and requires every occupant, front and rear, to be belted. Buckle up before you drive and require your passengers to do the same.
