Signs & Signals

South Carolina traffic signs use shape and color so you can read them quickly. Recognizing each one helps you react in time and answer these questions with confidence.

Shapes and colors

A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards ahead, and a five-sided sign warns of a school zone or crossing.

Traffic signals

A steady red means stop and stay stopped. A flashing red light is the same as a STOP sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.

Pavement markings

Yellow lines separate opposing traffic and white lines separate same-direction lanes. A solid yellow line on your side means no passing there; wait for a broken line and a clear road.
