Traffic signs, lights, and pavement markings communicate the rules and warn of hazards on Tennessee roads.
Sign shapes and colors
A red octagon always means STOP, and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn of hazards or changes ahead, while white rectangular regulatory signs state laws you must obey. Orange signs mark construction and maintenance work zones.
Traffic signals
A steady red light means come to a full stop, and a steady green means go if the way is clear. A steady yellow warns that the light is about to turn red. A flashing red is treated like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
Solid yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions; a solid yellow line on your side means no passing. Broken lines may be crossed to pass or change lanes when it is safe. White lines separate lanes traveling in the same direction.
