Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules tell you who must yield so intersections stay orderly.
Stops and open intersections
At a four-way stop, the first to stop goes first; if two stop together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. At an uncontrolled intersection, yield to any vehicle already in it and to the vehicle on your right.
Turns
When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before turning. You may turn right on red after a full stop unless a sign prohibits it, yielding to pedestrians and cross traffic.
Roundabouts and merging
Yield to traffic already circulating in a roundabout, then enter when there is a gap and travel counterclockwise. When merging onto a highway, match traffic speed and merge into a safe gap.
