Signs & Signals

Texas road signs and signals use standard shapes and colors to give rules and warnings.

Sign shapes

A red octagon means STOP and always requires a complete stop. A downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn of hazards ahead, and rectangular white signs give regulations such as speed limits.

Traffic signals

A steady red means stop; a steady yellow warns that red is coming. A flashing red is treated like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.

Pavement markings

Yellow lines separate opposing traffic; a broken yellow line means you may pass when safe, while a solid yellow line on your side means no passing. White lines separate lanes going the same direction.
