Speed & Conditions
Safe speed depends on posted limits and on the conditions around you.
Reasonable and prudent speed
Texas law requires you to drive at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for conditions, never faster than is safe even when it is below the posted maximum.
Common posted limits
Unless otherwise posted, the prima facie limit is 30 mph in an urban district. School zones have lower posted limits when their lights are flashing, and highway maximums are higher and clearly signed.
Adjusting for conditions
Slow down and add following distance on wet, icy, or gravel roads and in fog or heavy rain. Reducing speed lowers the chance of skidding or hydroplaning and shortens stopping distance.
