Fire and Emergencies
Preventing fires and knowing what to do in an emergency, including the fire triangle, hot works and evacuation.
How fires start
A fire needs heat, fuel and oxygen, known as the fire triangle. Removing any one of these prevents or extinguishes a fire, which is the basis of good housekeeping and fire prevention on site.
Hot works
Welding, grinding and cutting create ignition sources. Use a permit-to-work system, remove or protect combustible materials, keep a suitable extinguisher to hand, and keep a fire watch after finishing to catch any smouldering fire.
If there is a fire
Raise the alarm, get yourself and others to safety, and call the emergency services. Only tackle a small fire if you are trained and it is safe. Know your escape routes and assembly point before you start work.
