Working safely with substances that can harm your health, including chemicals, asbestos, silica dust and cement, under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations.
COSHH basics
Before using a hazardous substance, read the COSHH assessment and safety data sheet, and use the control measures and respiratory protection specified. Store and dispose of substances correctly.
Asbestos
Asbestos causes fatal lung diseases and is most dangerous when disturbed. If you suspect asbestos, stop work, do not disturb it, warn others and report it so licensed specialists can deal with it. Never sweep or dry-brush it.
Dust and cement
Cutting or grinding masonry releases respirable crystalline silica, which causes silicosis; control it with water suppression or on-tool extraction and RPE. Wet cement is highly alkaline and causes burns and dermatitis, so protect your skin and wash off splashes.
