Manual Handling and Work Equipment
Reducing injuries from lifting and carrying, and the safe use of tools and equipment under PUWER and LOLER.
Safe manual handling
Before lifting, assess the load and use a mechanical aid or get help for heavy or awkward items. When you do lift, bend your knees, keep your back straight, hold the load close, and turn your feet instead of twisting your spine.
Using work equipment (PUWER)
Work equipment must be suitable for the job, kept in good condition, and used only by trained, competent people with the correct guards in place. Report damaged tools and never remove safety guards.
High-risk equipment
Some tasks need specific training. Only trained people may change an abrasive wheel or operate powered plant, and lifting equipment must be properly maintained and examined. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
