Safety Signs and PPE
Understanding the colours and shapes of safety signs, and the correct use of personal protective equipment.
Reading safety signs
Blue circles are mandatory (you must do something); red circles with a line are prohibition (you must not); yellow triangles are warnings; and green signs show safe conditions such as first aid and escape routes.
PPE is a last resort
PPE is the last line of defence, used after other controls have reduced the risk as far as possible. Common items include hard hats, high-visibility clothing, safety boots, and eye, hearing and respiratory protection.
Looking after PPE
PPE only protects you if it fits, is worn correctly and is in good condition. Replace a hard hat that has taken a heavy impact or is damaged, and check your PPE before each use.
