Incidents, First Aid & Documents

Knowing how to respond at a collision and which documents you must hold are core legal responsibilities.

At the scene of a collision

Warn other traffic, switch off engines and stop anyone smoking. Call the emergency services and do not move casualties unless they are in immediate danger.

Basic first aid

Check that a casualty's airway is clear and they are breathing. Do not remove a motorcyclist's helmet unless it is essential, such as to keep the airway open.

Documents you must have

You must hold a valid driving licence, insurance and, if applicable, an MOT certificate. If you cannot produce documents at the roadside, you must present them at a police station within seven days.
