Rules of the Road
Speed limits, junctions and lane discipline keep traffic flowing safely and predictably.
National speed limits
For cars the national limits are 30 mph in built-up areas with street lighting, 60 mph on single carriageways, and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways, unless signs say otherwise.
Junctions and traffic lights
Give way as directed by road markings and signs, and never enter a yellow box junction unless your exit road is clear. At traffic lights, wait behind the stop line until you can proceed safely.
Motorways basics
Keep to the left lane when the road ahead is clear and use the right-hand lanes only for overtaking. The hard shoulder is for emergencies only, not for stopping or resting.
