Safety & Your Vehicle
A roadworthy, well-maintained vehicle is both a legal duty and a key part of safe, efficient driving.
Tyres and condition
Car tyres must have a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way around. Tyres should also be free of cuts and bulges and inflated to the recommended pressure.
MOT and maintenance
A new car must have its first MOT test when it is three years old, and then every year. Regular checks of lights, brakes, oil and washer fluid help keep the vehicle safe and legal.
Eco-safe driving
Driving smoothly and reading the road ahead reduces fuel use, emissions and wear. Harsh acceleration and braking, under-inflated tyres and carrying unnecessary weight all increase fuel consumption.
