Road Signs & Signals
Sign shape and colour tell you the kind of message before you read the detail.
Sign shapes and colours
Circular signs give orders: a red ring means a prohibition (something you must not do), while blue circles give a positive instruction you must follow. Triangular signs with a red border warn of a hazard ahead.
Speed limit signs
A red circle with a number shows a maximum speed limit in mph. A white circle with a single black diagonal stripe means the national speed limit applies for that type of road and vehicle.
Traffic light sequence
Lights follow red, red-and-amber, green, then steady amber, then red again. A steady amber means stop, unless you are so close that stopping might cause a collision.
