Physical Intervention Theory
The principles behind safe physical intervention, which is always a last resort, and the serious medical risks that make good technique and monitoring essential.
A last resort
Physical intervention is only ever used when necessary and proportionate, after communication and de-escalation have failed or are unsuitable. Any force must stop as soon as it is no longer needed.
Positional asphyxia
Restraining a person face-down, or applying pressure to the neck, chest or back, can cause positional asphyxia and death. Avoid these positions and constantly monitor the person's breathing.
Monitoring and aftercare
If a person says they cannot breathe or shows distress, release or ease the restraint at once, reposition them and get medical help. Always monitor a person after any intervention and record what happened.
