The Law
The legal boundaries a door supervisor works within, including reasonable force, assault, negligence and licensing offences.
Use of force
Any force must be reasonable, proportionate and necessary, for example in self-defence or lawful ejection. Using more force than is needed can be a criminal assault, and door staff must be able to justify their actions.
Assault and duty of care
An assault is causing someone to fear immediate unlawful force; a battery is applying it. Door supervisors also owe patrons a duty of care and can be liable for negligence if they act carelessly.
Licensing offences
It is an offence to sell alcohol to a person who is drunk or to someone under 18. Door and bar staff share responsibility for preventing under-age and drunk sales.
