Zero alcohol for learners
Learner and probationary drivers in Victoria must have a zero (0.00) blood alcohol concentration whenever they drive. A fully licensed driver must stay under 0.05, but the zero rule applies until you gain a full licence.
Drug driving
It is an offence to drive with certain illegal drugs in your body, and police conduct roadside saliva testing. Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines can also impair driving, so check labels and ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Demerit points
Demerit points are added to your record for driving offences. Learner and probationary drivers have a lower threshold than full licence holders: reaching 5 or more demerit points within any 12-month period leads to a licence sanction. Confirm current figures with the official source.
