Give Way Rules
Australia drives on the left, so give-way rules are built around that. Knowing who goes first keeps intersections orderly and prevents crashes.
Uncontrolled intersections
At a cross intersection with no signs or signals, give way to any vehicle approaching from your right. When turning right at any intersection, give way to oncoming vehicles going straight ahead or turning left. At a T-intersection, the driver on the road that ends must give way to all traffic on the continuing road.
Roundabouts
As you approach a roundabout, slow down and give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout. Signal right if turning right, and signal left as you leave the roundabout where it is practical to do so. Take the correct lane before you enter.
Hook turns and pedestrians
In parts of central Melbourne a sign requires a hook turn: to turn right you wait at the far left of the intersection and complete the turn when the lights for the road you are entering turn green, so you do not block trams. Always give way to pedestrians when turning into a road they are crossing.
