Sharing the Road Safely

You share the road with cyclists, pedestrians, trams, motorcyclists and heavy vehicles. Extra space and attention keep everyone safe.

Cyclists and motorcyclists

When overtaking a bicycle rider you must leave a gap of at least 1 metre where the speed limit is 60 km/h or less, and at least 1.5 metres where it is over 60 km/h. Check mirrors and blind spots for motorcyclists, who are smaller and easier to miss.

Trams and pedestrians

Where a tram stops at a stop with no safety zone, stop level with the rear of the tram and give way to people getting on or off. Give way to pedestrians on marked crossings and when you are turning into a road they are crossing.

Avoiding distraction

Learner and P1 drivers must not use a mobile phone at all while driving, including hands-free and while stopped in traffic. Keep both hands for driving and your eyes on the road so you can respond to other road users.
