Chapter 4 of 520% of exam
Speed & Road Conditions
The speed limit is a maximum, not a target. Safe drivers adjust to the conditions and to the limits that apply to learners.
Speed limits
In a built-up area with no signs the default limit is 50 km/h. Open roads are often 100 km/h and some freeways are signed to 110 km/h. Always drive to the posted limit where signs are shown.
Learner speed limit
A Victorian learner permit holder must not exceed 100 km/h, even on a road with a higher posted limit. Building up experience at safe speeds is part of learning to drive.
Adjusting to conditions
Keep at least a 3-second following gap and increase it in rain, fog, at night, or on unfamiliar roads, because stopping distances grow. Slow to 40 km/h when passing a stationary emergency vehicle that is displaying flashing lights.
