Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Virginia's right-of-way, passing, and roundabout rules keep traffic orderly and predictable.
Yielding and intersections
At an uncontrolled intersection, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Yield to pedestrians and to any vehicle that has entered the intersection ahead of you.
Roundabouts
A roundabout is usually marked with a yield sign at each entrance. Yield to traffic already circulating, enter counterclockwise when there is a safe gap, and signal before you exit.
Passing
You must not exceed the speed limit while passing and must complete the pass before a no-passing zone. When passing a bicyclist on a road of fewer than four lanes and you cannot change lanes, slow to 10 mph below the limit and pass at least two feet to the left.
