Steering and following distance
Hold the wheel at the 8 and 4 o'clock positions with your fingers and thumbs. Keep about a three-second following gap at 35 to 45 mph, and increase it in poor conditions.
Blind spots and lane changes
Before changing lanes, signal, check your mirrors, and look over your shoulder to check the blind spot your mirrors do not show. Move over only when the lane is clearly open.
Railroad crossings
Never try to beat a train, and stop when signals warn of one. If your car stalls on the tracks with a train coming, get out immediately and run diagonally away from the tracks.
