Signals, Signs & Pavement Markings
Traffic signals, signs, and markings communicate the rules and warn of hazards on Virginia roads.
Sign shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards ahead, and a red circle with a slash means the action shown inside is prohibited.
Traffic signals
Steady red means stop and steady yellow warns the light is about to turn red. A flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution, while a flashing red is treated like a stop sign.
Warning and advisory signs
An advisory speed sign shows the maximum safe speed for a curve or exit. Reduced-speed-ahead and stop-ahead signs prepare you to slow down for what is coming.
