Speed & Road Conditions
A speed limit is the maximum for ideal conditions; Virginia law requires slowing down when conditions demand it.
Virginia speed limits
Unless posted otherwise, the maximum for passenger vehicles is 25 mph in school, business, and residential areas and 55 mph on many other highways. Many interstates are posted at 70 mph.
Driving for conditions
You may be ticketed for driving too fast for conditions in rain, snow, or ice even if you are at or below the posted limit. Slow down and leave extra space when visibility or traction is poor.
Work zones
Obey posted work-zone speed limits to protect highway workers. A conviction for exceeding the speed limit in a highway work zone can bring a fine of up to $500.
