Rules of the Road & Right of Way

Right-of-way rules keep intersections orderly by deciding who proceeds first. In West Virginia you yield, keep right, and make room for emergency vehicles.

Intersections

At a four-way stop the first to arrive goes first; if two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. At a yield sign, slow down and let cross traffic and pedestrians go first.

Turning

When turning left at a green light, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before completing the turn. Signal early and check for cyclists and pedestrians.

Emergency vehicles and lane use

When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren, pull to the right and stop until it passes. On multilane highways keep to the right except when passing so faster traffic can use the left lane.
