Signs & Signals
West Virginia traffic signs use shape and color so their meaning is clear before you read the words. Recognizing signs and signals quickly is the foundation of safe driving and a large part of the knowledge test.
Shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamonds warn of hazards ahead, orange diamonds mark work zones, and white rectangular signs are regulatory, such as posted speed limits you must obey.
Traffic signals
A steady red means stop and stay stopped, and a steady yellow warns that red is coming, so stop if you can do so safely. Green means go once the intersection is clear and you have yielded to any traffic or pedestrians already in it.
Pavement markings
Double solid yellow center lines separate opposing traffic and may not be crossed to pass. A single broken yellow line means passing is allowed when the way is clear, and white lines separate lanes going the same direction.
