Sharing the Road Safely
WA roads are shared with cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and very long heavy vehicles, often over big distances. Space and patience keep everyone safe.
Cyclists and following distance
When passing a bicycle rider leave at least 1 metre where the limit is 60 km/h or less, and at least 1.5 metres where it is over 60 km/h. Keep at least a 3-second following gap and increase it in poor conditions or behind large vehicles that block your view.
Road trains and heavy vehicles
Road trains are very long and take far more distance and time to overtake. Only pass when you can see a long, clear stretch of road ahead and have room to return safely. Leave heavy vehicles extra space, as they cannot stop quickly.
Avoiding distraction
Using a hand-held mobile phone while driving is an offence. New drivers should avoid all phone use, including hands-free, because distraction is a major cause of crashes.
