Signs & Signals
Signs and signals instruct and warn you. Reading them early gives you time to act safely.
Regulatory signs
Regulatory signs are legal rules. A red octagonal STOP sign means stop completely behind the line, then give way. A triangular GIVE WAY sign means slow down and be ready to stop to give way. A red circle with a diagonal line through a symbol is a prohibition, telling you what you must not do.
Warning signs
Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn of hazards ahead, such as curves, crests, crossings, children or animals. They prompt you to slow down and prepare. Advisory speed signs suggest a safe speed for the hazard.
Traffic lights
Red means stop and stay behind the line. Yellow means stop if you can do so safely, because the light is about to turn red. Green means you may go if the way is clear and you have given way where required.
